A man, who claimed to be the Secretary of the Lagos State Commercial Motorcyclists Association, was on Thursday arraigned for fraud before the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court.
Olusegun Sowemimo, 47, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining under false pretence.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that Sowemimo on Dec. 9, 2010 defrauded the Igando Branch Chairman of the association, John Olatunji, of N4,500.
He introduced himself as the Secretary to the Lagos State Motorcyclists Union and said that he was sent by the Lagos State chairman of the union.
He asked me to buy him MTN recharge cards amounting to N4,500 with the promise that I will be made the branch chairman of the yet-to-be-opened Ikotun unit of the union,” said the complainant.
Shonibare said that the offence contravened Sections 484, 419 and 390 of the Criminal Code laws of Lagos State 2003.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Counsel to the accused, Hellen Ibeji, however, urged the court to grant the accused bail to afford the parties the time to negotiate an out- of-court settlement.
The Magistrate, S. Solebo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20,000, with a surety in like sum and adjourned the case to Feb. 7, 2011 for report of settlement.
