MINISTER WANTS FOUNDATION FOR EX-SERVICE MEN

Minister of Defence Adetokunbo Kayode has called for the establishment of a National Veterans Foundation to cater for ex-service personnel in the country.

Kayode made the call on Tuesday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the 2011 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

Kayode, who decried the poor response to emblem appeal fund launching, said the Foundation when established would go a long way in assisting families of deceased military personnel and helpless ex-service personnel.

Kayode said a committee would soon be set up to achieve the prompt realisation of the objective and promised to persuade his colleagues in the Federal Executive Council to fully participate in the 2011 emblem appeal fund sales.

The 2011 emblem appeal week will be launched by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Other activities to mark the Day include an interdenominational Church service in Abuja on Jan. 9, Juma’at Service at the National Mosque, Abuja, on Jan.14; and the laying of wreath at the National Arcade, Abuja, on Jan.15.

According to the programme, activities to mark the Day will take place concurrently in all the states of the federation and the country’s missions.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held every Jan.15 in honour of Nigeria’s war veterans, affords public spirited-individuals and organisations the opportunity to contribute to the welfare of ex-service personnel.
