FRSC records 9 deaths from road accidents in 5 days in Delta
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Delta says no fewer than nine persons lost their lives in auto-crashes in the last five days in the state.
Yakabu Attah, Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO) zone 5 comprising Edo, Delta and Anambra, said that the deaths were recorded in two separate road accidents along Asaba and Benin express way, adding that 29 persons were involved in the crashes.
He explained that the major causes of accidents were over- speeding and burst tyres, as Nigerians were always in a rush and some have not fully imbibed the culture of vehicle maintenance.
The zonal commanding officer said that road accidents might be difficult to eradicate, but could be reduced if Nigerians adhered to safety rules and road traffic rules and regulations.
While commending the Delta Government for its continued support, he appealed to the government to assist the FRSC by providing ambulance support service for the command.
Meanwhile, Luka Ikpi, Delta Sector Commander, has advised motorists and motorcyclists to desist from using mobile phones while driving.
Ikpi gave the advice in Warri at an end of year road safety rules sensitisation rally organised by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in collaboration with the Warri Unit Command of FRSC.
He explained that the use of mobile phones while on motion would distract the attention of the drivers, and could also endanger life of other road users.
The sector commander also advised against drinking of alcohol before driving, as well as driving when tired or feeling sleepy.
He said that okada riders and their passengers should use crash helmets and desist from overloading their motor bikes with goods and passengers.
He further called on motorists to ensure that their vehicles had fire extinguishers and fire certificates.
In his opening remarks, Joseph Udoabba said that the sensitisation rally was to bridge the gap between stakeholders and the public.
He stressed the need for the public and motorists to be informed about safety rules to enable them caution commercial motorists and riders when they default.
