A former hotel supervisor, Gift Emeneogu, has appeared before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, charged with the alleged theft of N20.6 million, property of her employer.
Emeneogu, 24, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Innocent Effiong, told the court that the accused committed the offence between July 2009 and October 2010.
Effiong said the amount allegedly stolen belonged to Mrs Stella Okoli, the hotel’s proprietress.
The accused, who worked hard as a receptionist, was later promoted to the position of supervisor in the hotel by her boss.
He added that the accused as a result of the trust placed in her stole N20,646, 961 from the hotel.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 390 (6) (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Emeneogu, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate, P. A. Ojo, granted her bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Ojo adjourned the case till Jan. 26, 2011 for further hearing.
