A professed estate agent, Jelili Olaide, and Demola Busari, his accomplice, were arraigned on Friday for alleged fraud.
Olaide, 44, and Busari, 33, are standing trial before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on charges of conspiracy, fraud, stealing and impersonation.
The prosecutor, Insp. Samuel Omoyeni, told the court that the men defrauded Oba Okeke, an electronics dealer, of N3 million between June and August 2009 in the Ogba area of Lagos.
Omoyeni said the defendants induced their victim to part with the money by claiming to represent his friend abroad, simply identified as Engineer Demola.
The prosecutor said the `fraudsters claimed that the money obtained from Okeke was to acquire a parcel of land for his friend abroad , who intended building a hotel, petrol station and residential accommodation.
Omoyeni said the offence contravened Sections 390 (9), 419, 484 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, M.O. Olubi, granted the defendants each bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties each in like sum.
The case was adjourned till Oct. 6, for further hearing.
