FIRE SERVICE ADVISES LAGOSIANS

The Lagos State Fire Service has advised residents to exercise greater caution in homes and work places to prevent fire outbreaks and unnecessary loss of lives.

The state Chief Assistant Fire Officer, Lawrence Sanwo said on Wednesday in Lagos that most fire incidents were due to carelessness.

Sanwo spoke on the sideline of the Annual Scientific Workshop of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igobi, Lagos, with the theme: ``Preventing Domestic Fire Accidents and Burn Injuries.

According to him, 65 per cent of fire incidents attended to by the service occur in homes.

There is need to enlighten the public on actions that can wreck havoc in our homes and offices, which could lead to high rate of loss of lives.

50 per cent of all burns are preventable; safety programmes can significantly reduce the incidence of burn injuries, most especially in homes and offices, he said.

Sanwo advised estate developers and builders to install smoke alarms in homes and public places in order to quickly detect fire outbreaks and prevent burns as well as loss of lives.

The fire chief also warned women against wearing jewelry in the kitchen and allowing babies and toddlers from playing in fire-prone environment.

He said government had recently purchased 20 water tankers, each with 10,000 litre capacity, to assist in combating fire incidents, adding that two or three tankers were usually deployed to a fire scene.

The fire service and the public have been having a cordial relationship as we always respond quickly to emergency calls.

The state government had increased from 8 to 15 the number of fire stations in Lagos Metropolis for the service to promptly and effectively respond to emergencies.

The emergency response call numbers are 767 and 112-- both toll free.
