The Copyright Society of Nigeria on Tuesday gave Oct. 1 deadline for the airing of free music on Nigerian airwaves and public places.
Elizabeth Ike, COSON's Head of Membership and Communications,Tony Okoroji, the Chairman of COSON, as saying ``starting from Oct. 1, no organisation using music in a commercial setting or in public anywhere in Nigeria is allowed to do so without the payment of copyright royalties as required by law.
The statement said further that unlicensed music users who did not comply with the ultimatum would be sanctioned.
It said since the mandate of the organisation included collection of royalties accruing to musicians, COSON was adequately re-positioned to ensure that copyright owners were not short-changed.
COSON is mindful of the prudent, professional and transparent management of the copyright royalties collected, so that at the end of the day, the real copyright owners are not short-changed.
It must get to the copyright owners accurately. We are stoutly determined to do a good job in the interest of all the stakeholders in the Nigerian music industry.
