Business man arraigned for demanding N3 mln ransom for stolen Kia Cerato car

A 27-year-old businessman, Chinonye Amazah was on Thursday arraigned for allegedly demanding a N3 million ransom for the release of a stolen Kia Cerato car valued at N2.5 million.

Amazah is standing trial before an Igbosere Chief Magistrate’s Court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and unlawful demand for ransom.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Peter Nwangwu told the court that the accused, with others now at large, committed the offence on Aug. 7 at about 6:10 a.m. at No 28, Esan Disu St., Orile Iganmu in Lagos.

The accused on the said day, time and place stole a Kia Cerato car worth N2.5 million.

The accused also demanded the sum of N3 million from Mrs Ngozi Okorie, the owner of the car, and threatened to dispose of it if she failed to pay,” he said.

The prosecutor said the accused was eventually arrested from his hideout, after a tip-off ,while his accomplices fled.

Nwangwu said the offence contravened Sections 516, 390 (9) and 406 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2006.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

The Chief Magistrate, Foluke Davies-Abegunde granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till Nov. 2 for further hearing.
