The Federal Road Safety Corps on Wednesday announced the temporary suspension of the issuance of driver’s licence in Lagos State.
Zonal Commander, Zone 2, Lagos, Danjuma Garba said the measure was to allow for the clearance of the backlog of applications.
The suspension is basically to clear the backlog and also to tackle the introduction of driving school certificate.
The idea of people going to driving school before obtaining the driver’s licence is to improve the safety performance of drivers in line with international best practices, Garba explained.
Meanwhile, the Lagos Sector Commander, Jonas Agwu said as from September two a fresh applicant for the driver’s licence in the state must present a certificate from an accredited driving school.
He said the certificate could be presented at any of the six information processing centres in the state.
According to him, the centres are located at the Sector command’s premises in Ojodu-Berger, Ikorodu, Ikeja, Bariga, Okokomaiko and Sura.
He said the move was in accordance with the objectives of the driving school standardisation programme as stipulated by FRSC Establishment Act 2007 and the National Road Traffic Regulations 2004.
Agwu said Section 22 (2) of the National Road Traffic Regulations 2004 empowered the Commission to compel all fresh applicants of driver’s licence to undergo prescribed driver’s training programme in an approved driving school.
He said in keeping with the provisions, 31 driving schools had been inspected, assessed and approved for the training of drivers.
Agwu advised fresh applicants to visit the nearest Commission Information Centre in the state, as well as the licensing offices for the list of the approved driving schools.
The offices, according to him, are located in Ojodu-Berger and the 15 unit commands at Ojota by the Tollgate, Ikeja, Oshodi, Isolo, Lekki, Epe, Airport, Iba, Badagary, Lagos Island, Surulere, Ikotun, Apapa and Wharf.
