The police in Lagos on Wednesday arraigned a police constable, Paul Ogbeh, at an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly shooting a man to death during patrol.
Ogbeh, 29, is facing a one-count charge of unlawful killing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Samuel Omoyeni, told Magistrate, M.O. Olubi, that the accused and some other anti-robbery policemen were drafted to the Ikorodu area of Lagos State to ward off a robbery attack.
Omoyeni said on their way to the robbery scene, a gunshot was heard and the anti-robbery squad sighted some men running away.
He said the accused and his colleagues ran after them and Ogbeh shot at one Awe Abiodun, who was running with the other men.
The prosecutor said Abiodun fell and some charms and a toy gun were found on him.
The prosecutor said the incident occurred on Jan. 18 at Oshinsanmi St., Ori-Okuta, Ikorodu.
He said the offence contravened Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code of Lagos State and was punishable with death.
The plea of the accused was not taken and the magistrate ordered that he be remanded in prison custody pending the advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.
