The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service tax enforcement team on Wednesday arrested two persons for allegedly assaulting its officials.
Afolashade Afolayan, leader of the team, said in Lagos that the duo allegedly assaulted members of the team in the course of discharging their official duties.
Afolayan said the two persons were employees of an oil servicing company in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The company, she said had a tax liability of N1.7 million between from 2003 to 2008.
She said members of the team had gone to the company’s premises to seal off the place which the workers resisted and attacked them.
Afolayan said that they would be charged to court for prosecution.
She advised those in the habit of assaulting tax officials to desist from the act, saying that the state government would no longer tolerate such criminal acts.
The team leader denied that the defaulting companies were not given enough notice before their premises were sealed off.
Afolayan commended companies that had been remitting their taxes regularly, saying that those that failed to remit would have their premises sealed.
She said some companies had refused to comply with the directives to remit their tax liabilities to the state government even, after deducting such money from the salaries of their staff.
Four companies, with tax liabilities of more than N36.5 million, were closed in Lagos by the team during the exercise.
