Temi Omatseye, the Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency , on Thursday urged the state governments to embrace the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme.
Omatseye, represented by Ibrahim Zailani, Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage, made the plea at the send-off ceremony organised for the batch three beneficiaries of the programme in Lagos.
The NIMASA chief said the programme was conceived to redress the dearth of seafarers in Nigeria.
He said seven states had already embraced the programme with Lagos State being the latest and advised other states to do so in the interest of their indigenes.
He said at the initial stage, there was apprehension about the programme but today NIMASA has achieved remarkable progress''.
Omatseye told the cadets that NIMASA would monitor their progress and give assistance when necessary.
Omatseye thanked the governors of Niger and Kaduna states for sponsoring the cadets.
31 of the cadets are from Kaduna State, while 25 are from Niger.
The programme was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Transport and NIMASA four years ago.
