Ban on motorcyclists: Lagos Police Command orders arrest of erring officers

The Lagos State Police Command has ordered the arrest of police officers who failed to use crash helmet while riding motorcycles on the state's highways.

It said necessary punitive actions would be taken against any of its officers and men caught disobeying government orders in the state.

The command’s warning came against the backdrop of reports of violations of the ban on motorcyclists from the expressways in Lagos metropolis.

Lagos State Government had on Sept. 1 banned commercial motorcyclists okada from operating on highways as well as Lagos Island, Victoria Island and Ikoyi.

They were also prohibited from the Third Mainland Bridge and network of roads around the State Government Secretariat at Alausa-Ikeja.

The spokesman for the command, Frank Mba said policemen and women, as law enforcement officers, were not above the law.

Mba said Any policeman found riding a motorcycle without a helmet will be arrested as no one is above the law of the land.

He said the Police Commissioner, Marvel Akpoyibo, frowned at flouting of lawful orders by service men.

There is no way the police will enforce a government order and disobey the same order; there is no room for disobedient officers in Lagos State,Mba said.

On the allegation that there were selective arrests of erring motorcyclists on the ban, the spokesman said The enforcement of the order is total.
