The police in Lagos on Wednesday said they have arrested two men, who allegedly specialised in helping criminals to smuggle arms into the country.
Police spokesman in charge of the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad in Adeniji-Adele, Lagos, Lekan Ogundare said they were caught at the Seme border.
Ogundare said the suspects were arrested with the help of the Beninoise policemen at the border post between Nigeria and Republic of Benin.
He alleged that the suspects were Nigerians who aided suspected trans-border robbers to smuggle arms and ammunition at the border between Nigeria and Benin Republic.
They were about crossing into Benin Republic with a bag when the Beninoise policemen stopped them. When the bag was searched, two guns and 29 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
Under interrogation, one of the suspects claimed he was helping another person, now at large, to take the bag across the border as the fellow was a visitor to the place.
The suspect claimed the fellow told him that the bag contained money,” Ogundare added.
The police spokesman noted that the activities of such suspects along the border, had made it difficult to stop the influx of illegal arms into the country.
Ogundare, however, assured members the public that the police would do all it could to check the entry of illegal arms into the country, particularly with the 2011 general elections drawing closer.
He said the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded on the matter.
