An unemployed man, Michael Odike, was on Thursday charged before an Apapa Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing PHCN armored cables valued N500,000.
Odike, 34, who is standing trial before Chief Magistrate O. O. Oshin, however, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.
The prosecutor, Sgt. John Iberedem, told the court that the accused was arrested on Sept. 9 at about 4 a.m. at the Federal Housing Authority, C-Way Treatment Plant, Alakija-Satellite Town, Lagos, while removing the cables.
Iberedem said the cables, property of the Federal Government, was neatly cut by Odike with the intent to sell to the public.
He said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of Criminal Code, Cap. 17. Vol. II, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused risk seven years imprisonment, if convicted.
Oshin granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
She directed that the surety must show evidence of tax payment and adjourned further hearing in the case till Oct. 6.
