The Nigerian Police Force on Wednesday in Abuja re-assured Nigerians of adequate security of lives and property during and after the Eid-el-fitr celebration.
Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu said the outgoing Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, gave the assurance.
Onovo was quoted as directing all state Commissioners of Police to ensure that all vulnerable spots in their commands be adequately policed.
The outgoing police boss said the directive became necessary to forestall any break down of law and order.
He said the present administration of the force is fully committed to re-engineering all the tenets and ethos of effective and efficient force so as to ensure that its past glories are maintained.
He urged the Muslim faithful to reflect on the virtues and teachings of Holy Prophet Muhammed in their relationship,’’ the statement quoted Onovo as saying.
According to Onovo, Eid-el-Fitr is a period of spiritual cleansing and that the fear of Allah should be given utmost priority in the lives of all adherents.
In another development, Ojukwu said the force would change its gender policy in order to improve the welfare and rights of female officers.
This is borne out of the desire of the present management led by the I-G to meet the dictates of the National Gender Policy 2006,’’ Ojukwu said.
He said when adopted, the policy would address issues of adequate representation of women, recruitment guidelines, mode of dressing, marital and reproductive rights, training and posting of women officers as well as gender based violence.
According to him, the force is partnering with the Ministry of Police Affairs, Police Service Commission, Civil Society Groups and other relevant organisations in order to achieve a holistic review of the policy.
