Awareness campaigns by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons have reduced the activities of human traffickers in Nigeria.
Its secretary, Simon Egede, said in Lagos on Monday that Many people were involved in the business and many allowed themselves to be trafficked because of the low awareness then.
Egede who made this known at the opening of a four-day workshop organised by the agency said But now, many are aware of the implication and Many vulnerable persons are educated on the operation of human traffickers.
He said the workshop was part of capacity building for the agency employees.
Egede was represented by the agency’s Director of Projects, Rimamnyang Kuffon, at the workshop with the theme “Stress and Trauma management for Victims of Trafficking”.
According to him, Most rescued victims pass through severe stress and trauma in the process of either being trafficked or repatriated locally and internationally.
This made it difficult for officers to elicit relevant information from them for the purpose of investigation, prosecution, counselling and rehabilitation, as well as assessment,” Egede said.
He noted that the agency’s officers often went through stress in the course of their duties, adding that the workshop was intended to make the officials put up optimal performance.
About Fifty employees of the agency are participating in the workshop.
