Undergraduate arrested for alleged murder

The police in Lagos has arrested a 20-year-old unnamed student of the University of Lagos, over the alleged murder of a 40-year-old woman, simply identified as Josephine.

Parading the suspect before newsmen in Lagos, the Lagos State Police command’s spokesman, Frank Mba, said the homicide occurred on Aug. 22 at No. 38 Akinwunmi St., Itire, Lagos.

Mba said the deceased moved into her assailant’s home shortly before the incident, following accommodation challenges.

According to him, investigation revealed that the woman returned to the house from an outing when the young man descended on her and beat her to a state of coma on the said day.

The police spokesman said her loud cries before passing out attracted neighbours who intervened and rushed her to hospital where she was later confirmed dead.

Mba said upon interrogation, the suspect claimed that his action was precipitate by depression, claiming that one of his brothers had a similar problem sometime ago.

He said based on the confession, the police would send the suspect to the psychiatric hospital, with a view to determining his state of health.

Since the suspect claimed he was depressed as at the time of the offence, we will take him for psychiatric test to get expert opinion. For now we would be proceeding on the assumption that he is sane,” Mba added.
