Nigeria is collaborating with the European Union, ECOWAS and other international organisations on border security to upgrade the nation’s socio-economic profile.
Minister of Interior, Captain Emmanuel Ihenacho, said this on Thursday at the opening of a two-day National Security Summit.
Ihenacho said Nigeria had also set up a Bi-National Commission with the countries it shared common borders with.
He said through the commission, various Memoranda of Understanding had been signed to improve border security through patrols.
Ihenacho said the nation faced several challenges of security ranging from ethnic militia, drug trafficking, cross border armed bandits, vandalism, boundary disputes, political violence, cyber crimes and of recent kidnappings and hostage taking.
The minister said the danger the unhealthy development posed to internal security and socio-economic development of the nation was not lost on the government.
According to him, the summit had provided an opportunity to exhibit some of the latest technology-based solutions available to tackle kidnappings and other organised crimes.
He said the summit would be expected to consider the desirability of establishing a Strike Force out of the existing internal security outfits to be trained and equipped.
