Traders at the Oshodi Market in Lagos on Wednesday appealed to the state government to urgently evacuate decomposing heaps of refuse at the market to prevent an epidemic.
The three large bins provided by the Lagos Waste Management Authority are overflowing with refuse.
The refuse has taken over some parts of the market.
The stench from the decomposing refuse has forced many traders to relocate to other sections.
Some of the traders, expressed concern that the refuse could cause diseases.
They also said the offensive odour had reduced patronage by customers.
Kehinde Fasina, who sells food items, said she was no longer comfortable.
Fasina appealed to LAWMA to come to their rescue.
Iyabo Isiaka, a dealer in beverages, said that business in the market could be crippled, if the refuse was not removed urgently.
Isiaka called for strict enforcement of environmental sanitation laws to prevent indiscriminate refuse disposal.
