Two charged with stealing drugs valued at N18.5 million

The police in Lagos on Friday charged a 24-year old pharmacy attendant, Uchenna Ogodo, before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing drugs valued at N18.5 million.

Ogodo was charged with an alleged 35-year old accomplice, Patrick Okonkwo.

The duo were charged for conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen property.

The Prosecutor, ASP. Innocent Effiong told the court that Ogodo stole 14,244 boxes of different pharmaceutical products from ICEE Pharmaceutical Ltd., Lagos, sometime between November 2009 and August 2010.

Effiong said the drugs stolen from the company’s store at the International Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, Lagos, included Icethrocin tablets.

He said after the theft, Ogodo transferred his loot to Okwonkwo, who knew that the stock was stolen.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 390 (9), 427 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State 2003.

The defendants both pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Effiong, however, opposed the bail application by counsel to the defendants, saying their release could jeopardise police investigation which was still ongoing.

The Chief Magistrate, Philip Ojo, nevertheless granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

The case was adjourned till Oct. 8, for further hearing.
